Growing Confidence, Capability and Capacity at Gloucester NHS Trust

Kellie Morgan

How Kellie Morgan’s Level 4 Project Management Apprenticeship Strengthened Team Resilience and Improved Operational Delivery

When Kellie Morgan began her Level 4 Project Management apprenticeship, she described herself as someone who “didn’t always believe in her own abilities” and often hesitated to share ideas. Working in a fast‑paced NHS environment, she supported projects behind the scenes but didn’t yet see herself as someone who could lead or influence them.

Eighteen months later, Kellie is a pivotal part of the Business Management function at Gloucester NHS Trust, known widely across her department for her organisation, her clarity, and, increasingly, for her confidence.

“I never expected to grow this much,” Kellie reflects. “This apprenticeship helped me realise that I can take on challenges, I can lead parts of a project, and I can make a meaningful impact.”

Her journey has not only transformed her personally but has brought significant, measurable value to the Trust.

A Journey Defined by Confidence and Capability

Kellie works closely with Lisa Izod, her manager at Gloucester NHS Trust. At the beginning of her apprenticeship, Lisa saw potential (strong organisational skills, attention to detail, and a genuine desire to learn), but Kellie lacked belief in herself.

“That’s what’s changed the most,” says Paula Andrews, Kellie’s specialist coach at Instep. “The difference in Kellie’s confidence is remarkable. She’s grown in so many ways, but the rise in her self‑belief is the most prevalent.”

As Kellie progressed through her apprenticeship and completed her APM qualification, she began applying project management principles directly into her role. She started coordinating information more efficiently, supporting project leads with clearer documentation and spotting issues early enough to prevent delays.

“I’m more organised, better at prioritising, and much more confident stepping into responsibilities that I used to feel unsure about,” Kellie says. “The knowledge I’ve gained has made my day‑to‑day work smoother and more effective.”

Stepping Up When It Mattered Most

The true impact of Kellie’s development became clear when Lisa needed to take an extended period of absence due to family bereavement.

In a situation that could have destabilised workflow and continuity, Kellie stepped forward.

“Kellie has started to step into Lisa’s shoes when she’s been away,” Paula explains. “She’s attending senior‑level meetings, supporting decision‑making and maintaining momentum in key areas of work.”

For the team, this continuity was invaluable.

Lisa herself commented:
“I cannot complete my role without Kellie. She is my right arm.”

This temporary shift in responsibility highlighted just how far Kellie had come; from quietly delivering behind the scenes to confidently holding the line for her team during a critical period.

Delivering Real, Tangible Value to Gloucester NHS Trust

Throughout her apprenticeship, Kellie has contributed directly to several business‑change projects within the Ambulatory Care segment. The improvement in her project support has created:

✔ Greater efficiency

Applying project management methods has helped Kellie streamline information, coordinate tasks, and manage deadlines more effectively. This has reduced duplication of effort and improved workflow across the team.

✔ Improved accuracy and reduced risk

With stronger understanding of project processes, Kellie can now identify potential issues earlier, helping prevent operational delays or avoidable errors.

✔ Increased team resilience

Her ability to take on responsibilities normally handled by senior colleagues has reduced pressure on the team and ensured continuity during periods of absence.

✔ Higher‑quality communication

Clearer documentation, stronger reporting, and more proactive communication have positively influenced project delivery and stakeholder confidence.

Paula summarises it simply:

“The organisation now benefits from someone who is developing with the right structure, skills and mindset. Kellie has become a genuine asset to the team.”

The Achievement She’s Most Proud Of

For Kellie, the biggest achievement isn’t a project ,or a piece of documentation, it’s the personal transformation she’s experienced.

“When I started, I doubted myself a lot,” she says. “But now I feel confident speaking up, contributing ideas and owning my work. I’m proud of the person I’ve become.”

Completing challenging elements of the apprenticeship, from producing detailed project documentation to presenting her work while balancing a demanding role, has proven to her that she can push past her comfort zone and succeed.

A Future Defined by Confidence and Opportunity

Kellie now feels ready for the next step in her career.

The skills she’s gained, combined with her strengthened confidence, have positioned her to take on more complex responsibilities and support higher‑level decision-making within the Trust.

“This apprenticeship has been genuinely life-changing,” she says. “It’s helped me grow into someone who adds real value; not just to my role, but to the organisation.”

Through her resilience, hard work and willingness to learn, Kellie has not only transformed her own career trajectory but has made a lasting positive impact on Gloucester NHS Trust.
