Carbon Literacy 2024: North West Business Collaborate On Climate Action

NEWS RELEASE by Hattrick

13th November, 2024

Two North West businesses are collaborating to support Manchester’s mission to become the first Carbon Literate City by 2027 in the run up to Carbon Literacy day. .

Communications agency, Hattrick, and corporate training provider, Instep, have joined forces this Climate Literacy Action Day (14th November 2024) to inspire and unite a variety of organisations during the world’s largest climate education and action event – coinciding with COP29.

“Carbon Literacy Action Day (CLAD) is a global initiative and I’m very proud to be doing something significant on the ground, here in Manchester, to contribute and make a difference,” says Hattrick’s MD and certified Carbon Literacy trainer, Malin Cunningham.

Last year Hattrick collaborated with North West business development organisation, Pro Manchester, to participate in the annual action day – increasing the number of professionals working in the city with the know-how to help drive decarbonisation in their day jobs.

Representatives from firms including Suez, N Brown, Squire Patton Boggs and TalkTalk came away able to make more informed business decisions and fly the flag for progress across multiple industries contributing to Manchester’s thriving business community.

This year, the collaboration with Instep, has attracted notable interest from organisations within the food and beverage sector, including food services and facilities management multinational, Sodexo, which has an office in Salford.

Says Lauren Webb, Director of Client Solutions at Instep: “We enjoy a special partnership with Greater Manchester – earlier this year we were appointed by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) to deliver fully funded leadership programmes for workforces across the region and also pride ourselves on delivering a great deal of social value in the city.

“It makes perfect sense for us to work with Hattrick to empower people with the tools to build a more resilient future as we know that’s what businesses want and need from their leaders.”

In October, the Manchester Carbon Literate City (MCLC) initiative was launched. Co-founded by Manchester Council as part of its Net Zero by 2038 target, organisations including Manchester Metropolitan University, Manchester Digital and Auto Trader have also

been instrumental in getting the city’s collective action off the ground. The aim is to encourage other boroughs to also strive for ‘Carbon Literate Localities’ status.

To become the world’s first Carbon Literate City and a bonafide Carbon Literate Locality, Manchester must have 15% of the city’s population successfully complete the training. As of 2024, this would mean 85,349 people and currently stands at 10,592 citizens.

“It’s an ambitious goal backed by Manchester City Council but entirely within reach,” says the Carbon Literacy Project’s co-founder, Phil Korbel. “Carbon Literacy Action Day is all about galvanising action and it’s fantastic to see organisations collaborating in this way to help accelerate this important movement.

“While leaders talk at COP29, Manchester is getting on with the job of showing the world how to engage whole populations in impactful climate action.”
