Building Better Decisions Through Data: Lora’s Apprenticeship Success

Lora Cartwright

How Lora Cartwright Used a Data Technician Apprenticeship to Deliver Organisation‑Wide Quality Improvements

When Lora Cartwright began her Data Technician Level 3 apprenticeship, she was working in a coaching role within the education sector, supporting learners on leadership and management programmes. Although she regularly interacted with datasets and Power BI dashboards, she often felt limited by her technical confidence.

“I could filter data and complete basic tasks,” she recalls, “but anything more complex took far longer than it should. I knew I was spending unnecessary time manually entering information or trying to make formulas work. I wanted to be more efficient, and I wanted my work to have a bigger impact.”

Lora had ambitions to progress into a quality-focused role, where data competence is essential. The apprenticeship quickly became not just a development opportunity, but a stepping stone toward a new phase of her career.

Choosing Apprenticeship Learning With Purpose

Lora had completed more traditional qualifications in the past, but the apprenticeship structure felt different; more immersive, more practical and more aligned with her goals.

“I wanted learning I could immediately apply to real situations,” she explains. “The apprenticeship model meant I couldn’t just understand the theory, I had to prove I could do it.”

This combination of practical application, tailored coaching and assessment against real‑world competence allowed Lora to embed new data skills quickly and meaningfully.

From Specialist Coach to Quality Leader

Partway through the programme, Lora achieved her first milestone: a promotion to Quality Advisor, a role where data processes, accuracy and insight are critical.

And almost immediately, she identified an opportunity.

One of the organisation’s quality processes relied heavily on multiple static documents, manual data entry and repeated monthly calculations. It was inefficient, time-consuming and vulnerable to human error.

Through her new data management and Excel skills, Lora redesigned the entire process.

“I created a single digital form, automated the data flow and worked with our BI Specialist so everything fed directly into Power BI,” she explains. “The whole process became faster, cleaner and more accurate, and suddenly the business had real‑time insights instead of static spreadsheets.”

This improvement alone:

✅ eliminated duplicate data entry
✅ reduced monthly processing time
✅ improved accuracy
✅ gave managers instant visibility of performance and trends
✅ enabled more confident decision‑making across the organisation

Her capability continued to grow, and so did her impact.

Shortly after completing the apprenticeship, she was promoted again, this time to Head of Quality, now leading the entire function.

“I genuinely believe the apprenticeship was a key factor in progressing,” she says. “It wasn’t just that I’d gained technical skills, it was being able to demonstrate real improvements and real impact.”

Transforming Data Processes Across the Organisation

Alongside streamlining quality reporting, Lora took ownership of the organisation’s survey platform, first analysing outcomes using her new skills, then identifying that the existing system was no longer fit for purpose.

Her apprenticeship had strengthened not only her technical ability but also her analytical thinking and confidence.

Using that combination, Lora:

  • reviewed alternative survey solutions
  • built a business case
  • gained leadership approval
  • implemented a new automated survey system

The new platform dramatically improved:

✅ depth and quality of insights
✅ visual reporting
✅ analysis speed
✅ the organisation’s ability to gather meaningful feedback

“It reduced manual processing time, improved accuracy and allowed us to make far better use of our feedback data,” Lora explains. “It’s been one of the most valuable changes I’ve delivered.”

Learning That Was Truly Personalised

One of the aspects Lora valued most was how personalised the apprenticeship felt.

Her specialist coach took time to understand her role, her career goals, and the challenges within the quality team. Every learning activity became an opportunity to solve a real organisational need.

“Nothing felt theoretical,” she says. “Everything I learned could be applied directly to something meaningful. That made the apprenticeship incredibly practical and hugely motivating.”

Growing in Confidence, Capability and Influence

By the end of the programme, the difference in Lora’s confidence was unmistakable.

She moved from relying on basic Excel techniques to confidently using advanced formulas, creating visual dashboards and managing data flows across different systems.

“I’m no longer daunted by data,” she says. “I know how to approach it, how to analyse it and how to present it. The amount of time I save each week is phenomenal.”

Her team and manager have seen the change too, from increased accuracy and efficiency to clearer insights and stronger decision‑making across the organisation.

A Message for Anyone Considering the Same Path

Lora encourages others to embrace the learning curve.

“At the beginning, it feels overwhelming,” she admits. “But once it clicks, it’s incredibly rewarding.”

Her advice?

  • Apply your learning to real projects as early as possible.
  • Speak to your manager about opportunities to use your new skills.
  • Protect your off‑the‑job learning time.
  • Stick with it, because it pays off.

“This apprenticeship has been one of the most valuable programmes I’ve ever completed,” she says. “It transformed my confidence, helped me progress twice in my career, and gave me the skills to lead meaningful change. The long‑term benefits are absolutely worth it.”
