The Organisation
United Utilities is the UK’s largest listed water company. They own, operate and maintain water and wastewater networks serving 3.2 million customer premises in North West England. They are a FTSE 100 company with a turnover of £2 billion and are the UK’s market leader in utility outsourcing.
The Challenge
The challenge was to equip experienced individuals in the organisation with the skills to train their colleagues, which could then be applied in a number of different situations, sharing the expertise within the organisation.
Instep's Contribution
Working alongside the Learning and Development Advisor, Instep designed and delivered a two-day Train the Trainer workshop which focused on developing the participants’ knowledge of a trainer’s role; what makes an effective trainer; how people learn and the barriers to learning.
The programme has given the participants the opportunity to follow a structured process for planning and implementing training, identifying training needs, write SMART learning objectives, checking the learners’ understanding and providing feedback.
Results
The participants are much more prepared and confident about designing and delivering internal training programmes across the organisation. They immediately put their new skills into action by delivering a wide range of events throughout the organisation.
One benefit of using internal trainers is that they have a greater understanding of the challenges facing the organisation and can therefore more readily empathise with delegates.
The costs savings to the organisation of being able to reduce their reliance on third party providers has already been double their initial investment, just three months after the training, and the eventual savings will undoubtedly be substantially more.

The training was excellent and the trainer used their skills to bring out all the participants’ own unique style of delivery and presenting - and this, in my opinion, was a big success. The whole group thoroughly enjoyed the two days. The trainer really engaged with all of us and we all feel better about designing courses and more importantly delivering them.
